Advantages of underdeck stowage

Underdeck carriage provides greater protection from seawater, rain, direct sunlight and external impact. It is generally preferred for sensitive machinery, steel products, bagged cargo and equipment that cannot tolerate prolonged weather exposure.

The cargo must fit through the hatch opening and into the hold. Crane outreach, hook height, obstructions, tween decks and the intended landing position all require checking.

When deck carriage may be considered

Deck carriage can accommodate units that cannot pass through the hatch or fit below deck. It may also be appropriate for robust oversized structures designed for outdoor exposure.

However, deck space is not automatically available. The vessel must retain safe visibility, access, stability and structural loading within approved limits.

Exposure and cargo protection

Weather-deck cargo is exposed to wind, waves, spray, rain, temperature changes and vessel motion. Packing and preservation must be designed for the route and season, not only for handling ashore.

Shrink wrapping alone may be insufficient. Sensitive components can require sealed barriers, corrosion protection, drainage arrangements and periodic inspection.

Deck strength and load distribution

The unit’s weight must be distributed within the allowable deck loading. Concentrated loads may require grillages, stools, beams or other engineered foundations.

Calculations should account for dynamic forces at sea as well as the static weight. The vessel’s class or designated technical authority may need to approve the arrangement.

Lashing and securing

Deck cargo securing is developed for longitudinal, transverse and vertical forces. Lashing points, welds, chains, wires, turnbuckles, stoppers and friction arrangements must form one coherent system.

The securing design should also permit safe inspection and retightening during the voyage where required.

Effect on vessel stability

Heavy cargo placed high on the vessel affects the vertical centre of gravity and stability. Large units can also create significant wind area.

The master and vessel’s technical team must confirm the loading condition, ballast plan, visibility and stability criteria before sailing.

Contractual and documentary issues

Deck carriage should be expressly agreed in the charter party and reflected correctly in bills of lading. Cargo interests should review insurance requirements, carrier clauses and any consent needed from shippers or receivers.

Responsibility for packing, lifting, dunnage, lashing, engineering and surveys must be allocated clearly.

Freight and operational cost

Deck cargo can require additional engineering, securing materials, welding, surveys and port time. It may occupy space that cannot be used by other cargo and can affect the vessel’s trading flexibility.
