Start with a complete cargo list
The cargo list should identify every unit, not only the largest pieces. For each item, owners normally need the length, width, height, gross weight, quantity and packing type. Measurements should clearly state whether they include skids, cradles, lifting frames, protective covers and transport supports.

Why individual unit weight matters

Certified lifting points, padeyes or trunnions should be identified together with their capacities. Where lifting lugs are unavailable, the parties need sufficient information to develop an alternative sling arrangement without damaging the cargo.
Hatch openings and hold geometry
A unit may fit inside the hold but still be too large to pass through the hatch opening. Owners therefore compare cargo dimensions with hatch length and width, coaming height, crane outreach and the geometry of the lowering path.
Once inside the hold, structural members, ladders, ventilation trunks, tween decks and other obstructions can reduce usable space. Detailed vessel drawings and a preliminary stowage study are particularly important for tall, wide or irregular units.
Deck strength and point loads
Heavy cargo does not distribute its weight evenly. Concentrated loads at support points can exceed the allowable deck or tank-top loading even when the average weight per square metre appears acceptable.
The shipper should provide the footprint and support-point arrangement. Owners can then determine whether grillage, timber, steel beams or other load-spreading measures are required. Engineering approval may be necessary for especially heavy or complex pieces.
Packing must suit ocean transport
Breakbulk packing should withstand lifting, terminal handling, vibration, vessel movement, weather exposure and the planned stowage position. The packing design should allow safe access for slings, shackles, forklifts or other handling equipment.
Weather-sensitive machinery may require sealed wrapping, desiccants, corrosion protection or covered stowage. Any prohibition on deck carriage, stacking or contact with other cargo should be declared before fixing.
Port and inland-access limitations
The selected vessel and cargo-handling plan must work at both ports. Berth strength, crane capacity, outreach, available shore equipment, working area and local operating restrictions can all affect feasibility.
Oversized cargo also needs a workable route between the factory, storage area and quay. Gate widths, bridge clearances, road restrictions and trailer access may determine which berth or port can be used.
