Shipping Construction and Mining Equipment by Sea: RoRo, LoLo and Breakbulk Options

Heavy construction and mining equipment prepared for sea transport

Excavators, bulldozers, wheel loaders, drilling rigs and mining machines can move by sea as rolling cargo, lifted breakbulk units or dismantled project cargo. The best method depends on the machine’s condition, dimensions, weight, lifting points and the facilities available at both ports.

Start with the machine’s actual transport condition

Manufacturer specifications are useful, but the chartering enquiry must reflect the unit as it will arrive at the port. Buckets, booms, counterweights, cabins, tracks or tyres may be removed, while fuel, hydraulic fluid and batteries may require special preparation.

For every unit, the cargo list should state:

  • Overall transport dimensions and gross weight
  • Operating or non-operating condition
  • Wheel or track configuration
  • Ground clearance and turning limitations
  • Centre of gravity and certified lifting points
  • Detached components and their packing
  • Any restriction on inclination, towing or lifting

Photographs and technical drawings allow owners to assess the cargo more accurately and reduce qualifications in their offers.

RoRo shipment for mobile equipment

Roll-on/roll-off transport can be practical when machinery is mobile, steerable and acceptable under the carrier’s operating rules. Self-propelled units may drive aboard, while non-operating equipment can require a tug master, mafi trailer or other terminal arrangement.

RoRo avoids a crane lift of the complete machine, but it introduces other limits: ramp capacity, deck height, turning radius, ground clearance, tyre or track pressure and access to the assigned deck. The cargo must also be safely secured for the voyage.

LoLo shipment on geared vessels

Lift-on/lift-off transport is often used when the equipment cannot roll, when the selected ports have limited shore facilities or when several heavy units are combined in one chartered shipment.

Multipurpose and heavy-lift vessels can offer shipboard cranes, box-shaped holds and flexible stowage. Their suitability depends on crane capacity at the required outreach, hatch dimensions, deck strength and available space for rigging.

A tandem lift by two cranes requires an approved lifting procedure and careful coordination. The combined nominal crane capacity cannot be considered without the permissible working radius, load sharing and vessel limitations.

Breakbulk shipment of dismantled machinery

Large machines may be partly dismantled to reduce lifting weight, height or freight space. Booms, blades, counterweights, drill masts and attachments can be shipped as separate units.

Dismantling may improve vessel options, but it also increases the package count and creates additional packing, identification and reassembly work. Every component should be clearly marked, protected and assigned to the correct main unit.

Deck strength and concentrated loads

Tracked machinery and heavy components can impose substantial concentrated loads. The vessel assessment should consider not only total weight but also the footprint and the points through which that weight is transferred.

Timber mats, steel plates, stools or engineered foundations may be required to distribute the load. These supports must be compatible with the deck structure and the planned seafastening arrangement.

Lifting points are not always obvious

Machinery designed to work on land is not automatically designed to be lifted as one sea-freight unit. Handrails, towing eyes and operational attachments should never be assumed to be certified lifting points.

The manufacturer’s lifting drawing should identify the correct sling positions and centre of gravity. Spreader beams may be needed to control sling angles and prevent contact with cabins, hydraulic lines or other vulnerable components.

Preparing machines for sea transport

Preparation can include cleaning soil and debris, securing articulated parts, retracting booms, protecting exposed cylinders, isolating batteries and controlling fuel or fluid levels. Destination-country biosecurity and import requirements should be checked before shipment.

Loose tools, spare parts and accessories should be packed separately. Keys, manuals and condition reports need a documented handover procedure.

Securing against vessel motion

Wheeled and tracked equipment must be prevented from sliding, rolling, tipping or shifting. Chocks, chains, wires, turnbuckles, welded stoppers and timber supports may form part of the securing system.

Parking brakes and hydraulic systems are not substitutes for marine seafastening. The final arrangement should consider vessel accelerations, cargo weight, support geometry and the strength of approved securing points.

Port capability can determine the transport method

The preferred vessel may change if the loading or discharge port lacks a suitable ramp, crane, berth or heavy-haul access route. Quay strength, draft, tide, working hours and availability of qualified stevedores must be considered before fixing.

For remote mining projects, the final delivery route may be more restrictive than the sea leg. Bridge limits, road gradients and turning areas should therefore be checked while the maritime option is being developed.

Record responsibilities in the fixture

The recap should clearly allocate responsibility for driving or towing, cranes, lifting gear, stevedores, dunnage, lashing, welding, surveys, shore equipment and removal of securing materials. It should also record the agreed cargo condition and any requirement for underdeck stowage.
